Do squirrels hibernate in summer8/3/2023 ![]() "They’re pretty solitary for most of the year, so the male has no clue where the female is most of the year except when they’re ready to mate," says Penn State’s Zervanos.Įven their maternal duty to their young is short and sweet. (See " Video: Why do prairie dogs do ‘the wave? ’") Unlike some of their cousins, such as prairie dogs, groundhogs are basically loners, seeking out their own kind only to mate. "They’ll go for your best cabbages and best foods that you have out there." They're loners. "They’re selective," says the Smithsonian's Thorington. Soybeans, corn, family gardens-it’s all a banquet in the eyes of a groundhog. "They dig fairly extensive burrows, and tractors can break an axle ," says Zervanos.Īnd since the animals are herbivores-and prefer tender, young greens-they can make nuisances of themselves by raiding crops. Those impressive tunneling skills make for great burrows, but they can also mean big headaches for those who work in agriculture. In some cases, groundhogs have more than one residence and move from one burrow to another. Their burrows even have separate rooms for defecation-otherwise known as bathrooms. "They have a burrow for hibernating, and then they have another section of the burrow that's more like their summer home where they can come out more easily." There can be several levels to their burrows, says Zervanos. They build impressive homes.Ī groundhog's burrow can be anywhere from eight to 66 feet long, with multiple exits and a number of chambers. So how much wood could a woodchuck chuck? None, apparently. Other sources claim it's a bastardization of the Cree word otchek for "fisher" or the Ojibwe ojiig, also for "fisher" or "marten," which Europeans appropriated and misapplied to the groundhog. It may have its roots in the Algonquian (or perhaps Narragansett) name for the animal: wuchak. It's thought to be a corruption of the Native American words wejack, woodshaw, or woodchoock. Surprisingly, the name woodchuck doesn't have anything to do with wood. They're also known as land beavers, but their most famous nickname is woodchuck. ![]() Groundhogs have many colorful names, including "whistle-pig" for their tendency to emit short, high-pitched whistles. Now, PETA is arguing to replace groundhogs with robot groundhogs equipped with artificial intelligence that detects shadows. Some animal rights groups have long taken issue with Groundhog Day, arguing that these shy animals should not be put on display or interrupted from their natural hibernation cycle. "He became the one to prophesize whether winter would come or not." There's a movement to replace them with robots. "When the Europeans came over here, they didn't have any hedgehogs or badgers to lay the blame on, so I think the groundhog got it by being here and being a good size," speculates Thorington. ![]() How it wound up being the groundhog’s responsibility in the U.S. In Europe, however, the animal used was generally a hedgehog or a badger. According to the folklore, a sunny Candlemas Day means a longer winter. While the reported origins of Groundhog Day are many, the concept is thought to be linked to the Germanic tradition of Candlemas Day, a Christian feast day. " the most widely distributed marmot of all of them, as far south as northern Alabama to northern Canada-and some are even found in Alaska," says Stam Zervanos, retired professor of biology at Pennsylvania State University in Reading, who's conducted extensive research on groundhogs. What's more, groundhogs have an extensive range and can be found all over North America. "They are giant ground squirrels is what they are," says Richard Thorington, curator of mammals at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. Groundhogs ( Marmota monax) are a type of rodent known as a marmot, and marmots are closely related to squirrels. But what else is there to know about these annual celebrities? Here are some little-known facts. celebration in which people turn to these mammals to predict the weather: If the groundhog sees its shadow on that day, lore has it there will be six more weeks of winter. Held every year on February 2, Groundhog Day is a unique U.S. Each year groundhogs enjoy 15 minutes of fame-and then most people proceed to forget about them completely.

Turbulent flow vs laminar flow8/3/2023 The blood which was at rest in the poststenotic region during diastole is accelerated through the sample volume. In the post-stenotic region of a diseased artery the Doppler waveform is more complex ( Fig. Within the sample volume the blood velocity magnitude and direction are similar for all of the red cells, hence the spectral width is low and the waveform outline is smooth. Doppler spectra are shown from the normal femoral artery in Figure 2-2A in this case flow is laminar. The effect of the flow state on the Doppler waveform is illustrated in Figure 2-2. During pulsatile flow, vortex shedding may occur for only a portion of the cardiac cycle. Vortices which are shed travel a few diameters downstream and eventually die out as their energy is absorbed through viscous losses. At even higher Re values, the vortex shedding will be combined with the random flow patterns of true turbulence. Again this is not strictly turbulence, as the velocity magnitude and direction at any location is not random, but follows a regular pattern. At higher Re values there will be vortex shedding at regular time intervals. At low velocity the fluid flow within the vortex is actually laminar. During steady flow at low Re values the vortex will be stable and limited to the region immediately behind the stenosis. The pattern of vortex production will change as the degree of stenosis and blood velocity increase. The most important example of this is seen with the phenomenon of vortices, which are regions of circulating flow often produced when there is some obvious change in vessel geometry such as a stenosis, or the normal carotid bulb. There is also a third flow state called disturbed flow, which refers to variations in velocity magnitude and direction which occur at low values of Re. During pulsatile flow it is therefore possible for the flow to be laminar at values of Re higher than the critical value, because turbulence does not have time to develop before the blood velocity has decreased. When velocity is increased so that the Re is above the critical value, turbulence will take a small amount of time to develop. For flow in which Re is about 2000 the fluid flow will alternate between turbulent and laminar. For a wide variety of fluids the transition to turbulence takes place at a value of Re of about 2000. Where ρ is the fluid density, L is the vessel diameter, V is the mean velocity and μ is the fluid viscosity. It was found that a dimensionless number called the Reynolds number ( Re) was useful in characterising the fluid flow. (B) The velocity vector magnitude and direction in turbulent flow have random components the time-averaged profile is blunt.Ĭoncepts of laminar and turbulent flow first arose from consideration of flow in long straight tubes. ![]() FIGURE 2-1 (A) Laminar flow consists of flow along well-defined streamlines the velocity profile in a long straight tube under conditions of steady flow is parabolic.

Debian install samba server8/3/2023 Look, it may also work on other desktop environments, but I haven't tested it yet. Why weren't other desktop environments tested? And that's fine, but this script has only been tested on Ubuntu and Pop OS. Should you end up with something that looks like this below:īefore you download and run this script, you may not be on a Gnome-based Ubuntu-type distro. Right-click on the directory and select Network Share.Ĭheck off the Allow others to create and delete files in this folder box. Locate the directory in Nautilus (Files on Pop OS). This will once again assume Gnome for the sake of simplicity using Nautilus. I also recommend rebooting the client computer with which you will be accessing the remote shares.īack on the computer with the remote shares, we need to make them…shareable. So go ahead and restart then and then reboot. Instead, I prefer to spot any errors now vs. I like restarting the above services, not because it's going to help get sharing going per se. And even though your Samba shares are only available on your local network, it's best to keep things locked down on a fundamental level. This command will allow you to set up a strong password for your Samba shares. Step four - Lock the doors behind you with a strong password. Where $USER is, you can leave it as is, or to understand how the pieces go together, replace it with the results of your whoami command previously. Step three - Everyone wants to belong to the cool group. Now let's add your Linux user to the appropriate Linux group. That command won't help you figure out who you are as a person, but it will tell you your current username as your distro sees you. Sudo apt update & sudo apt install samba nautilus-shareĭid I lose you? Hopefully, those instructions weren't too complex. Step one - install your Samba bits (this assumes Ubuntu-based distros and Gnome). Understanding the risks and potential consequences of stranger-danger in your network shared directories, allow me to show you the simple steps to do the following: No one needs this in their life - not even the KFC Colonel himself. Without a username and password authorizing access to your Samba files, you might end up with a KFC breakdancer man putting his “finger lickin' good” phalanges all over your shared files. The above example is why it is important to know who is accessing your shared files. Thankfully he's just there to pass out coupons for new customers. There is some whackjob who is clearly "a few cards shy of a full deck" breakdancing on your porch with a KFC bucket on their head. You open the door a crack and are shocked to witness something I hope no one ever has to experience. ![]() You put down the dinner you've been nibbling at to see who is bothering you at this late hour! You yell to the person on the other side of the door, "Who is it?" No answer. You've got the house to yourself, and you'll finally binge-watch your favorite streaming series. You have your favorite food on a TV tray. Imagine you're all settled in for the night. So why is it still an issue on otherwise newbie-friendly Linux distros in 2022? Consider the following tale of woe… Like most desktop environments that offer GUI tools to get Samba working, Gnome forgets two simple steps - the user and the password. name resolve order, host name length restrictions, etc. If you have to turn the clock back to SMB1 days you need to follow the rules set at that era. Whether you can "discover" all the workgroups and hosts in Nautilus is another matter. That will probably eliminate the SMB1 error message. If you don't do that on the server you will likely get a protocol negotiation failed: error. ![]() ![]() Then restart samba: sudo service smbd restart If the server is running Ubuntu 20 or anything with the same version of samba you would have to edit smb.conf on that machine and add: server min protocol = NT1 If you kept your Win10 machine up to date it is disabled so you will have to enable it there. Of course the server you are trying to connect to must have SMB1 enabled on its side. Right under the workgroup = WORKGROUP line add this one: client min protocol = NT1 Second, if you are talking about that specific error when running smbclient you would need to enable SMB1 ( Samba calls it NT1 ) on the client side in /etc/samba/smb.conf. ![]() First, there is no such thing as a HomeGroup in Linux, MacOS, or Windows starting with Win10.
